Playing with Unique Wedding Theme Ideas

Throughout most of the Twentieth Century, the Victorian wedding reined supreme in popularity. Everyone wanted that elegant white wedding. Today, the basics of the Victorian white wedding can still be seen in most weddings, especially in the color of the bride’s gown and often the style, but couples are beginning to move into more exotic wedding tastes.

Themed weddings have become the norm, and your possibilities are endless. Some very popular wedding ideas for themed weddings are the medieval wedding. Imagine a reception in a tall room with a roaring fire in the fireplace and tapestries hanging from the wall. Imagine Gregorian chants wafting from hidden speakers. Or why not hire a minstrel to entertain your guests while you all dine on roast chicken, pheasant, or leg of lamb.

One variation of the medieval, that continues to surprise me in its popularity since the movies are now several years old, is the Lord of the Rings wedding. It does have a number of quite intriguing possibilities however.

An option that has only recently come from the realm of bad jokes to something that can be pulled of with style is the Western Wedding. Another option that has enjoyed a recent resurgence is the Native American Wedding. How about an Ancient Roman themed wedding? People have even been known to get married while sky diving or after hiking up to a waterfall in the mountains.

Opponents of the themed wedding object that such events trivialize the solemnity of the marriage that it pretends to celebrate. My response to them: The trivialization of any wedding comes from the individuals involved - not the ceremony. We all have heard about couples that have traditional weddings and then throw their vows out the window - sometimes even that night!

I'm not against religious weddings. Enjoy a wedding that celebrates your religious tradition -whatever that means to you. But don't do it just because that's what everybody does. That's just plain crazy.
